It’s taco Tuesday!!
My family and I are traveling, and eating out more often than we do at home. Some find it challenging, but on this trip I feel like we are hitting home runs at every meal!
These are my veggie tacos from Key West Tacos in Cape May, NJ (http://keywesttacos.com/). It’s a really fun little place, where you order at the counter and sit at one of the few indoor tables, or outside at a picnic table.
The person taking our order was super helpful when I told him we are vegan, and avoid oil and excess salt. He explained that they don’t use animal products in the rice or beans, and assured us that the tacos would be good for us. He double checked to make sure I was okay with the white flour tortillas, I was, and he took over from there.
Pictured is what we ended up with, and they were amazing!! Beans, rice, corn, peppers, onions, pico, and lots of shredded cabbage. Everything was super fresh, tasty, and I couldn’t detect any oil or added salt.
My point in sharing this is twofold. First, to reinforce that with a little searching you can find delicious healthy Plant-Based food in restaurants. And second, if you approach considerately, and with appreciation, explaining what you want, sometimes people will go out of their way to provide it for you.
I also do realize that this is off season, and the restaurants we’ve been going to are not overly crowded. But that can be worked around in peak season as well with a little planning, eating at off times, calling ahead, etc.
So give it a try sometime, and please let us know where you are eating out so others can get ideas from your experience as well.
