We have all heard that eating healthy is too expensive and not worth the effort. I am here to tell you that is a myth! Animal products and processed foods are very expensive and when they are off the menu you find your grocery bill drops. That is liking getting a raise without the extra work. Below you will see 15 tips that we have used to even further slash our food bill. We think you will find them helpful too. - Organize your kitchen and refrigerator. You won’t know what you have if you can’t find it or see it. Use a spice rack to have quick access.
- Plan your meals for the week and buy only what is on your list. Then you only need to go to the store once a week and will decrease impulse buying.
- Don’t shop when you are hungry. It has been shown that if you eat a healthy snack before shopping you are more likely to buy healthy foods!
- Cook at home. Buying food and preparing it at home is always healthier and cheaper than eating out.
- Cook in large batches once a week so you have leftovers for the rest of the week and use to pack your lunch. You can also repurpose your leftovers for new meals later in the week. This will decrease the impulse to buy junk fast food, keeps money in your pocket and decreases stress about what to eat. When you put away the leftovers store them in containers and portions that you can just grab and go. This will encourage you to actually eat them.
- Buy in season whole foods. Whole foods are the ones without ingredient lists and are often found in the produce section. Buying foods in season means cheaper prices and more nutritious. If you buy too much, divide it up and freeze it for future use.
- Buy generic or grocery store brands. These are often cheaper and healthier. Some stores have organic the same price as competitors non organic.
- Stop buying processed junk food. Enough said.
- Stock up on foods when they are on sale like canned beans and frozen fruits and vegetables. These have longer shelf lives.
- Buy frozen fruits and vegetables. These foods are flash frozen after being picked and often as nutritious or more so than regular produce that has traveled thousands of miles to your store.
- Buy food in bulk. Foods like grains, nuts, and dried beans in the bulk section have a lower per unit price and can be stored in air tight containers for future use.
- Grow your own produce which is like growing your own money. If you can’t have a garden then try going your own herbs or sprouts on a counter.
- Sign up for a grocery store discount card. These are free, you get discounts and they will send coupons for the foods that you have bought in the past.
- Shop at farmer’s markets at the end of the day when you are more likely to find discounted prices.
- Shop at ethnic markets. Bulk and unique ingredients cost less and you may come across some new foods.
